“Slovakia lags behind neighboring countries in the area of sustainable buildings, but we are seeing positive developments. The construction of sustainable buildings and the introduction of certification standards are becoming increasingly popular,” said Marek Kremeň, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of SKGBC.

BREEAM is the most popular system in Slovakia with 152 certified buildings. More than half of them achieved the “very good” level and one third achieved the “excellent” level. Four buildings achieved the highest level of “exceptional”. 29 buildings in our country have LEED certificates. There are also 19 buildings in the capital rated by the WELL certification system.

“The first international sustainability certificates were awarded in Slovakia in 2012. Currently, we have certified administrative, residential, logistics and industrial buildings with the highest ratings. However, we do not yet have a single internationally certified building from the public building sector,” pointed out Pavol Kukura, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SKGBC.

Logistics and industrial buildings accounted for more than 55 percent of all buildings with a sustainability certificate at the end of last year. "The second largest group was administrative buildings, which accounted for 34 percent of the total number of buildings. The share of the retail sector has been increasing for several years and is approaching ten percent," SKGBC added. The most certified buildings are in the Bratislava region, with a share exceeding 56 percent.
